The Western Illinois mens soccer team has not gotten off to the start they would have liked to in 2019, and that tough start continued yesterday, September 8th, in a road game against UIC.
Two first half goals, the first of which coming in the first five minutes, saw UIC off and running as the counter attack of the Flames was too much for the Leatherneck defense. Despite the efforts of Caleb Ragland and Daisuke Otsuka, the Leathernecks were unable to cut into the lead going into halftime.
The second half saw UIC continue to apply pressure to WIU, as they seemed unable to find away to counteract the Flames’ deadly counter-attack. The work paid off again for UIC as they were able to secure the dagger goal in the 73’ to lock up a 3-0 lead and all but secure the win.
WIU will have its next chance to break into the win column when they play potentially their biggest match of the season, a home matchup with Big Ten foe Northwestern. The Battle of the Purple will take place on Thursday, September 12th at 4:30 PM.
