Western Illinois’ women’s basketball team hit the road again as part of a tough 4 day stretch that saw them travel to Purdue-Fort Wayne, back to Macomb, and today, to Omaha. The Leathernecks went down early and were losing at halftime, but used a huge defensive 3rd quarter to come back and pick up the win. The win marks their 4th straight, and pushes their Summit League record to 8-4.
WIU did this on the back of a trio of 20-point performances from Olivia Kaufmann (game-high 24), Annabel Graettinger (20), and Dani Nichols (career-high 22). Nichols in particular has played extremely well of late, as she has strung together the best scoring stretch of her young WIU career. She has now put together 7 15-point performances in her last 8 games, including her last 6. Her scoring prowess has only added to the impressive trio of Graettinger, Kaufmann and Taylor Higginbotham, who struggled offensively but did add a game-high 10 rebounds.
This game ends what can objectively be looked at as a soft stretch of the schedule, as their next four opponents in order are: South Dakota (H), Oral Roberts (H), Denver (A), and they finish with a massive road matchup with South Dakota State. South Dakota will come to town, for a 2 vs 3 matchup in the Summit League standings, on Saturday, February 16, with a tip-off scheduled for 4:30 PM.
