WIU Men Continue Skid

The Western Illinois men’s basketball team continued it’s recent struggle with a 79-64 loss in a road matchup with Purdue-Fort Wayne yesterday.

WIU lost this one despite Brandon Gilbeck putting up potentially his most impressive line in four years as a Leatherneck. Gilbeck scored 12 points, added 16 rebounds and blocked 10 shots to provide the first Summit League triple-double in nearly 28 years. The rest of WIU shot just 37% from the field, however, and could not provide enough around Gilbeck to power them to a win.

On the PFW side of things, Freshman guard Jarred Godfrey scored 17 points on what was a perfect shooting night. He finished 7-7 from the field and 3-3 from the 3. Overall, PFW had 5 players in double figures, and played the tight defensive game that has come to define this Mastodons team. They came out and executed a great gameplan, which allowed them to avenge their shocking 87-58 loss to WIU earlier this year.

WIU now sits at a perilous 3-8 in Summit League play, just one game above last place Denver. Should Denver win one more game and beat WIU in their meeting at Denver later this month, Denver would take over the last Summit Tournament spot. With the season hanging onto a thread, WIU will need a big performance when they play South Dakota at home next Saturday at 2 PM.
